Our History

Public commitment to Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies

1974

The organisation began as the Centre for Energy Studies and was an administrative centre of the State Administration with no financial autonomy.

Areas of activity:

Completion of industry sector studies

Definition of technical measures for energy conservation

Promotion of renewable energies

Regulatory activities

1984

Renamed the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy, IDAE, and becoming an Autonomous Entity with technical autonomy.

Functions:

Energy audits and assessments

Plans for electrification of rural areas

Assessment and consultancy services in the diversification and saving of energy

Administration of funds for subsidies in incentive schemes

1986

Converted into a State Body with the ability to offer the following technical and financial services:

Actions to improve energy efficiency.

Planning and implementation of renewable energies.

Interventions in the market to promote the saving and diversification of energy.

1999

As a Public Business Entity with financial autonomy, it has the following responsibilities:

To improve energy efficiency and promote the implementation of renewable energies.

To energise the market through offering technical and financial services for innovative and replicable projects.

To reflect the Ministry of Industry and Energy’s energy efficiency and renewable energy development policies through actions, until the creation of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2000, which is the Ministry to which the IDAE will report until July 2002.

2002

By Royal Decree 777/2002, dated 26 July, the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy becomes assigned to the Ministry of the Economy through the Secretary of State for Energy, Industrial Development and Small and Medium Enterprises.

2004

With effect from 17 April 2004, and through Royal Decree 553/2004, the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy is assigned to the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, through the Secretary of State for Energy, whose responsibilities are approved by Order ITC/1102/2004 published in the Official State Bulletin number 103 of 28 April 2004.

2011

By Royal Decree 1887/2011, of 30 December, the IDAE is assigned to the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism through the Secretary of State for Energy.

2016

Royal Decree 424/2016, of 11 November includes the Secretary of State for Energy within the structure of the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda.

Its current President is Daniel Navia Simón.

2017

Through the agreement of the General Management of Community Funds of the Ministry of the Treasury and Public Function, the Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), a public entity of the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda, has been designated as an Intermediary Body for the management of activities corresponding to Thematic Objective 4 (Low-Carbon Economy - EBC) of the Operational Programme for Sustainable Growth ERDF for the period 2014-2020.  This appointment was ratified by the Administrative Council of the IDAE on 2 June 2017.

Royal Decree 903/2017, of October 13, is published, which develops the basic organic structure of the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and Digital Agenda, in its fifth final provision modifies Article 1 of the IDAE Statute. Its denomination is E.P.E. Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), M.P.
